Calling all poets, rappers, vocalists and lyricists! If you are between the ages of 10-18, we encourage you to showcase your talent at the 2015 PAAN Slam.

UAC Program Partner Philadelphia Anti-Drug/Anti-Violence Network (PAAN) will host their 2015 PAAN Slam on Wednesday, February 4th at the Pearl Movie Theater at 1600 N Broad. All poets, rappers, vocalists and lyricists ages 10-18 are welcome, however participants cannot use profanity, vulgar language or sexual explicit content. Those interested in performing must arrive at 3:30pm for auditions and material review.

2015 African American Children's Book Fair

We invite you to come experience an enriching day of African American Children's literacy. Meet and greet with some of the literary world's most profound authors of our time. Make Saturday, February 7. 2015 a family day.

On Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 1pm-3pm, the 2015 African American Children's Book Fair will be hosted at the Community College of Philadelphia located at 17th & Spring Garden Street in the gymnasium. Award-winning authors and illustrators will be in attendance to read and autograph their books. There will be a wide selection of African American books for children, preschool to young adult available for purchase. As an added bonus, promotional giveaways, prizes, and games will highlight the afternoon.

Join Global Citizen at Girard College for a King Day of Service for Health & Wellness screenings and a Kids Carnival.

Come join Global Citizen on January 19th, 2015 at Girard College for their King Day of Service event. Beginning at 8am, organizations will host a Health and Wellness Fair that will provide expert health advice, screenings for diabetes, sickle cell anemia, HIV/AIDS and CPR training. At 9am, the King Day of Service Kids Carnival will offer service opportunities, stories and art projects all relating to the life, legacy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Educating in the Digital Age: A Celebration of Writing & Literacy

On Saturday, October 25th from 8am-5pm, the Philadelphia Writing Project in partnership with the Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC) have teamed up to provide area teachers a full day of professional development including breakout sessions, product demonstrations, and expert panels that will highlight and showcase the future of digital and literacy education both in and out of the classroom.

 

Taste of Freedom Luncheon 2014

The Taste of Freedom Luncheon, presented by the Mann Center for Performing Arts, will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014 at the Union League located on 140 South Broad Street. The Luncheon is a part of Mann’s Philadelphia Freedom Festival, a seven-month project celebrating the life of 19th century African American civil rights pioneer, Octavius V. Catto, and commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

Finding Faces: A Century of African-American Portraiture

Come see an exhibit of African-American portraiture from artist Michael Guerin. The exhibit, Finding Faces: A Century of African-American Portraiture, is a selection of artworks that will debut at the University City Arts League Gallery in cooperation with the Diartspora Gallery from January 31-February 28, 2014.

Arts and fun for Philadelphia teens!

 

The Students at Museums in Philadelphia (STAMP) is having its official launch party on Friday, October 4th, 2013 at the African American Museum from 3:30-5:30 p.m. STAMP is an initiative by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance aimed to increase teens’ access to all the arts and culture Philadelphia has to offer.  STAMP offers free passes to Philadelphia teens ages 14-19 to some of the city’s top museums and attractions.
