Planning for a Day of Purposeful Service

On Wednesday, November 12, 2014 from 1pm to 2pm, the Urban Affairs Coalition Program Partner Global Citizen 365 is hosting a Martin Luther King (MLK) Day of Service Planning Webinar. With three months away until MLK Day, this project planning meeting will highlight forthcoming initiatives for 2015. Last year's MLK Day of Service attracted over 125,000 volunteers and completed over 1,700 projects across Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Organizations will learn how to organize projects and be given advice on how to properly develop their ideas.

On Tuesday, December 9, 2014 from 1pm to 4pm, The Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal (PSIJ) is teaming up with the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) and Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC) to assemble a panel of experts to discuss national and local trends, current projects and financing strategies. Panel topics will include innovated nonprofit projects in education and healthcare and neighborhood and place based development projects. This event will be followed by a reception from 4pm to 6pm.

On Monday, November 3rd, The School Reform Commission (SRC) will have its first Strategy, Policy, and Priorities meeting of the year. The focus of this meeting will be the READ! by 4th Campaign, and for future meetings, educating the SRC and the public on pressing education policy issues in the city. There will be three presentations: READ! by 4th Strategy, Creating Effective Partners, and Parent Engagement, with group discussions in between each panel.

Free Flu Shots!

State Senator Shirley M. Kitchen will be offering free flu shot clinics on Tuesday, October 21st and Thursday, October 30th at her office located at 1701 West Lehigh. Residents over 65, young poeple with chronic illnesses, children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years and pregnant women are at higher than normal risk of catching influenza this season. The Center for Disease Control recommends that everyone older than 6 months should receive a yearly flu shot before the end of COtover. Partnering with Walgreens and the U.S.
