Student loan debt has reached over a trillion dollars! For this reason, UAC has partnered with Philadelphia City Controller, Alan Butkovitz for his Bank on Philadelphia program. This week, as part of the program, UAC's Tiffany Thurman taught a financial aid workshop to students at Philadelphia Mennonite High School. Students learned about the importance of understanding the basics of student loans. This is one of many financial literacy courses that will be provided by UAC throughout April -- Financial Literacy Month. A story on the workshop aired on NBC 10's Consumer Watch.

Business News in Brief: Bank Grant to Aid Students

The Citizens Bank Foundation presented a $50,000 grant this week to the Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition's effort to promote financial literacy among public school students. Part of the grant will support development of the coalition's Financial Advancement Network Club workshops, including six new clubs for 60 students on "Getting, Keeping, and Growing Your Money"; "Smart Shopping"; and "Living on Your Own." The clubs will be hosted by the School District for seventh- and eighth-grade students.

Local CDFI to Help Spur Job Creation in the US


(Philadelphia, PA) February 10, 2012 – Entrepreneur Works, a local community lender, announced today that it has received a capital grant from the Create Jobs for USA Fund, a collaboration between Starbucks and Opportunity Finance Network (OFN). The money will help Entrepreneur Works create and sustain jobs in the Greater Philadelphia region as part of a national campaign to support community businesses in underserved communities.
