Bill Pickett Riding Academy: Making Connections That Make a Difference

The Bill Pickett Riding Academy (BPRA) is a testament to the connections UAC empowers program partners to make. A great idea for kids to learn self-esteem and life skills, BPRA provides instruction in horseback riding and equestrian care, such as grooming and tending stables. BPRA also houses one of the country’s only black cowboy museums, and hosts a free summer camp.

Since 1997, UAC has worked with BRPA to help build its capacity. But membership in the Coalition has benefited BRPA in other ways. "Because of UAC’s network we’re able to reach more people, which brings volunteers and financial help," says program founder Isaac Johnstone.

Johnstone also learned about potential funding opportunities through discussions with UAC staff. He applied for, and was granted, $40,0000 in federal funding through a School District of Philadelphia program that supports students with special needs.

And at an event hosted by UAC and The Eagle football team, Johnstone approached the Eagles with an opportunity for sponsorship of a rodeo for youth. More news to come on this as his project develops!
