Global Citizen organized the first Beer Summit after President Barack Obama took office, in the wake of the July 2009 arrest of Harvard professor, Henry Louis Gates, on the front porch of his own home by Cambridge Police Sergeant, James Crowley. President Obama invited the two men to the White House for a meeting over beer to discuss the incident and race relations. As the eyes of the nation were focused on the White House, Global Citizen hosted their own Beer Summit in Center City for concerned citizens to meet and discuss race relations in our city and throughout the nation.
